Combination sweeper-scrubbers explained: sweeping and scrubbing in one pass
A combination machine sweeps and scrubs in one pass. It saves time on large floors with mixed soiling, but needs space and maintenance.
A combination sweeper-scrubber has a sweeping module and a scrubbing unit in one machine. The sweeping module first picks up loose debris, then the machine scrubs the floor wet and vacuums up the dirty water. You do not have to sweep first and scrub separately. This type is mainly used on large floors, for example in logistics and industry.
How does a combination machine work?
The machine runs through several steps in one pass: sweeping, scrubbing and vacuuming. It therefore has a hopper plus clean-water and dirty-water tanks.
- Sweeping module with brushes and hopper
- Scrubbing unit with brushes or pads
- Squeegee and recovery tank
- Battery or engine drive
Advantages of a combination
One pass means less driving time and fewer machines to operate. This pays off mainly on large, continuous floors with mixed soiling.
- Time saved on large areas
- One operator, one pass
- Less preparation through pre-sweeping
- Suited to mixed soiling
Drawbacks and points of attention
A combination machine is larger and heavier and has more parts that need maintenance. For small areas or narrow aisles it is often too bulky.
- More space needed to turn
- Higher purchase cost than a single machine
- Maintenance of two systems
- Less flexible than two separate machines
Rule of thumb
A combination machine pays off on large, open floors with mixed soiling and regular cleaning. For small spaces or varying tasks, separate machines are often smarter.
Combination or two separate machines?
If you mainly clean large, open floors with mixed soiling, a combination machine pays off. If tasks are often only dry or only wet, two separate machines are more flexible. A sweeping robot followed by a scrubbing robot is a third option.
- Ratio of dry to wet soiling
- Available space and aisle widths
- Hours of use per week
- Rent, buy or refurbished
Frequently asked questions
What is a combination sweeper-scrubber?
A machine that sweeps, scrubs and vacuums up the dirty water in one pass.
Is a combination always better than two machines?
No. It pays off on large, open floors with mixed soiling. For small spaces or varying tasks, separate machines are often more flexible.
Can I rent a combination machine?
We have a rental page for XXL combination machines. Ask about current availability.
What maintenance does a combination machine need?
Both the sweeping and the scrubbing side: brushes, filters, squeegee and tanks. A fixed workshop and readily available parts are therefore important.
