Scrubber-dryers explained: how they work, types and how to choose
A scrubber-dryer scrubs the floor wet and immediately vacuums up the dirty water. The floor stays clean and dries quickly.
A professional scrubber-dryer combines three steps in one pass: applying cleaning solution, scrubbing the floor with brushes or pads and vacuuming up the dirty water with a squeegee. It is used in warehouses, production halls, shops, care facilities and car parks where floors need wet cleaning.
How does a scrubber-dryer work?
Solution flows from the clean-water tank to the brushes, which loosen the dirt; the squeegee then draws the dirty water into the recovery tank.
- Clean-water tank and dosing
- Brushes or pads
- Squeegee and recovery tank
- Battery or mains cable
Walk-behind or ride-on?
Walk-behind models suit small to medium areas and narrow aisles. Ride-on models are more productive on large areas and reduce operator strain.
- Area per cleaning round
- Aisle widths and turning circle
- Tank size and runtime
- Frequency of use
Brushes, pads and floor type
The right brush or pad depends on floor and soiling. Smooth floors need a different approach than rough or profiled floors.
- Smooth or rough floor, joints and profile
- Type of soiling: dust, grease, oil
- Cleaning agent and dosing
- Wear and brush replacement
Rule of thumb
If the floor must be cleaned wet and be dry again straight away, a scrubber-dryer is the logical choice. Combine it with a sweeper or sweeping robot for a better result and less wear.
Pre-sweeping and safety
Coarse debris on the floor can burden brushes and squeegee, so sweep first with a sweeper or sweeping robot. Also mind slip safety: the floor dries quickly, but always check it.
- Sweep first, then scrub
- Warning signs in wet zones
- Floor must tolerate water
- Empty and clean tanks after use
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a scrubber and a scrubber-dryer?
A scrubber-dryer vacuums up the dirty water immediately, leaving the floor dry. A plain scrubber does not.
Do I need to sweep first?
With a lot of coarse debris, yes. It protects brushes and squeegee and improves the result.
Battery or mains cable?
Battery machines are flexible and practical on large areas. Mains-powered machines need no charging but are less manoeuvrable. Choose based on use.
Can I rent a scrubber-dryer or buy one refurbished?
Yes, both are possible. Our rent-or-buy page explains which option suits which use.
