Hybrid automation: using a sweeping robot and a scrubbing robot together

Hybrid automation combines robots and machines: a sweeping robot first picks up the dry debris, then a scrubbing robot cleans the floor wet. This splits the work according to what each type does best.

On many large floors there is both dry and wet soiling. A sweeping robot is made for dust and loose debris, a scrubbing robot for wet cleaning. Together they create a routine that runs largely on its own. A second form of hybrid also exists: robots for the daily routine and a manual machine for edges, peaks or deep cleans.

01

Why two robots one after the other?

A scrubber-dryer performs better and wears less on a floor that has already been swept. Separating sweeping and scrubbing lets each robot do what it was built for.

  • Remove dry debris first, then clean wet
  • Less coarse debris for brushes and squeegee
  • More even result
  • Scheduling at fixed times
02

Planning and coordination

The robots must not get in each other’s way. Plan sweeping first, then scrubbing, with separate charging spots and routes. This keeps aisles clear for staff and internal transport.

  • Sequence and time windows
  • Separate charging stations and routes
  • Avoid high-traffic zones
  • Plan water filling and emptying
03

Safety and set-up

Several robots in one environment call for a careful site analysis: passages, safety zones, warnings and instruction for your team. Wet zones must be clearly marked.

  • Site analysis of passages and zones
  • Warnings and visibility
  • Instruction and maintenance
  • Agreements on manual work at edges

Rule of thumb

Hybrid automation works when the robots run in sequence on separate routes and you divide wet and dry tasks clearly. Start with a site analysis and a demo on your own floor.

04

When does hybrid automation pay off?

It pays off mainly on large, relatively open floors with recurring dry and wet soiling and a fixed cleaning frequency. Calculate in advance with your own figures, for example in our calculator.

  • Area and aisle widths
  • Ratio of dry to wet soiling
  • Cleaning frequency and time windows
  • Rent, buy or lease

Frequently asked questions

What is hybrid automation?

It combines robots and machines, for example a sweeping robot followed by a scrubbing robot, or robots for the routine and a manual machine for edges and peaks.

Why sweep first and then scrub?

This leaves less coarse debris on the floor for the scrubbing robot, which improves the result and limits wear.

Do both robots need their own charging station?

Usually yes. Charging station and routes are coordinated during the site analysis.

Can I start with one robot and expand later?

Yes. Many businesses start with a sweeping robot and add wet cleaning later. Discuss it during the site analysis.
